7 Surprising Things that Physical Therapists Treat

Updated: Dec 6, 2021

I know most people know what physical therapists are, but I have a feeling some people may not know all the different specialties and conditions we can help treat. Here’s a few:

Balance conditions: it’s NOT normal to fall, lose your balance, or feel unsteady. PT can help with that.

Vestibular conditions: dizziness and vertigo can happen for a lot of reasons. Sometimes our nervous system is very sensitive and very reactive and needs help adjusting to stimuli, sometimes crystals in the ear need help returning to their proper canal. PT can help with that.

Headaches: headaches can happen for a lot of reasons, sometimes it’s caused by issues with the neck or the vestibular system, sometimes stress and anxiety. PT can help with that.

Nerve pain: numbness, tingling shooting pain, stabbing pain, weakness that seems to come out of nowhere can oftentimes indicate that a nerve is not moving well leading to more pressure and irritation to the nerve. PT can help with that.

Chronic pain: a lot of times when we are in pain, the last thing we want to do is move or we become afraid to move because we aren’t sure what will make it worse. Our bodies need help learning what exercise is safe and okay and how to gradually progress and do things that will not cause harm. PT can help with that.

Pelvic floor conditions: pelvic floor conditions are some that people don’t always feel comfortable talking about which means that we may not realize that some things we feel aren’t normal. Issues such as pelvic pain, incontinence, difficulties with bowel movements or urination are very distributive to daily routines. PT can help with that.

TMJ/ jaw pain: jaw pain, pain with chewing, difficulty opening your mouth, clicking, and popping can all be very limiting. PT can help with that.

In Arizona, physical therapy is direct access meaning you have the right to get PT when you need it. And you have the right to choose your PT.
